GAINSBOROUGH is a parish and market town, and the head of a petty sessional division, a county court district and poor law union, situated in a valley on the eastern bank of the river Trent, which here separates this county from Nottinghamshire, 1. Here is a station on the main line of the Manchester; Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, and another on the Spalding and Doncaster extension of the Great Northern and Great Eastern joint railway.
